ISCC PLUS certification

Offering proven thermoplastic elastomers with the corresponding ISCC PLUS certificate (mass balance).

Interested parties and customers can now obtain selected TPE solutions with ISCC PLUS certification. Interested parties and customers can now obtain selected TPE solutions with ISCC PLUS certification. ISCC PLUS-certified materials offer lower product carbon footprints (PCF) by means of mass balancing. The compounds show the same processability and technical performance while ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements. Compliance with various social and ecological standards is ensured as part of a comprehensive audit, from which processors and end consumers benefit. This ensures full traceability in the supply chain, including proof of origin of raw materials and materials. Customers from the consumer and medical sectors in particular will benefit from the extended offering as these products will support you in taking the next steps towards the Circular Economy.

OUR KNOW-HOW – YOUR ADVANTAGE

ISCC is a globally applicable, recognized and standardized certification system for

  • bio raw materials
  • bio-circular raw materials
  • circular raw materials

Using a mass balance approach, a gradual increase in the proportion of more sustainable raw materials is enabled. Thus, fossil raw materials are replaced and the CO2e footprint is successively reduced. This mass balance approach makes it possible to mix 🌿renewable and fossil raw materials in production processes and ensures that the sustainable share remains traceable in the balance sheet.

What is ISCC PLUS?

Systems that promote the sustainability of raw materials in production and processing, as well as the replacement of fossil raw materials with renewable raw materials, are becoming increasingly important. In this way, companies fulfill their responsibility towards society as well as the demands of customers and end consumers. Certification makes this visible and appropriately comparable. One of the leading standards in the field of sustainable biofuels is the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) Standard.

This ISCC standard was developed to demonstrate compliance with the sustainability requirements of the European Renewable Energy Directive (EU RED) and the German Biofuel and Bioelectricity Sustainability Ordinances. In addition to "establishing an internationally oriented, practicable and transparent system for the certification of biomass and bioenergy", the standard can be applied for sustainability certification in the food, feed and chemical industries.

After recognition of the ISCC standard as the first standard in the field of sustainability certification in Germany in July 2010, recognition by the EU Commission followed in 2011 for all types of biomass and biofuels worldwide. With ISCC PLUS, the International Sustainability & Carbon Certification extends its certification system to food, feed and technical or chemical materials.

What does Mass Balancing mean?

In a nutshell: The Mass Balance Approach is about (1) mixing fossil and sustainable feedstock (recycled or renewable/bio-based) in existing systems and processes, while keeping track of their quantities along the value chain (2, 3) and attributing them freely to one or several output products (4).

 1. Fossil and non-fossil raw (recycled or renewable/bio-based) materials are physically mixed in existing systems and processes.

2. & 3. However, these materials are kept segregated in the mass balance bookkeeping along the value chain: For each entity in the value chain, the mass balance bookkeeping is audited and verified by an independent third party until the final product reaches the end-consumer.

4. There are different options on how to attribute the sustainable input share to final products: The entire sustainable input can be accredited to only one output (Product C) to allocate the maximum portion of the sustainable ISCC PLUS certified material (Option 1). Or, the sustainable input can be attributed to several outputs (Products A, B and C), with an accordingly lower share of sustainable ISCC PLUS certified material assigned (Option 2).

In any of the selected options, the reported sustainable content in the final products cannot exceed the initial input of sustainable raw materials.

For whom is the use of TPE compounds with corresponding certification suitable?

Our products with ISCC PLUS certification (mass balance) can be purchased and used by certified companies and by interfaces already certified under ISCC EU. In particular, KRAIBURG TPE customers from the highly regulated consumer and medical sectors benefit from the certificates. In these areas, strict regulations and specifications frequently take effect, which is why it is often not possible to change materials.

KRAIBURG TPE solutions with ISCC PLUS certification offer the advantage for customers and processors that so-called “negative testing” is no longer necessary due to the "drop-in" solution. Customers receive a product that is chemically identical to their existing solutions.

What are typical application examples for TPE with ISCC PLUS certification?

Primarily, KRAIBURG TPE sees the main areas of application in the highly regulated medical and consumer sectors. In particular, new doors are opening up for applications that fall within the food compliance sector, including, for example, toys and utensils for infants and children, food storage as well as food containers for transportation. But a whole new field is also opening up in the medical segment, where currently available recycled or bio-based raw materials are not accepted or when material requalification is not possible.

Do existing customers receive new sample booklets?

Due to the so-called "drop-in" solution, the compounds with ISCC PLUS certification (mass balance) from KRAIBURG TPE are chemically identical to standard compounds. For this reason, there are no separate sample booklets. Customers and interested parties are welcome to contact their sales representative or general contact at any time to find out more about current sample plates.

What are the delivery times for the compounds?

The standard delivery time for KRAIBURG TPE products is approx. 3 weeks. For more information, please contact your sales representative.
